ART WORK ON THE BOARD
New Poster Designs
In the beginning..
As a teenager, my frequent visits to the Rice Street Fish Market (converted to a Headshop in 1967) turned out to be fruitful.
The Market was a clearing house of Bill Graham's
Fillmore West and Chet Helms Avalon Ballroom posters featuring the work of Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin and Mouse. Prices then varied from $1.50 to $3.50 per poster. Today, the same Fillmore / Avalon posters range from $300-$650.00 and beyond.
In 1968, I was relegated by assignment, to design and produce posters for upcoming dances featuring local bands at my high school. My inspiration gleaned from Wes Wilson's stylistic renderings and his undecipherable assemblage of Alfred Roller's typeface. The posters I created back then were one of a kind originals produced without the benefit of mechanical reproduction or desktop computer technology.
Each work took days to create. Needless to say, all of my work never reached it's intended audience. If art theft is considered flattery, I was smitten. The originals are long gone and now forever faded from memory.
In keeping with the tradition, 40 years after I put ink brush to paper, I'm back reliving the halcyon days of a by gone era.
